After spending some time looking at related research, it also became clear that Biodanza appears to fulfil a gap, as most of the studies focused on the reduction of disease or infirmity rather than on how we might actually improve our capacity for safe intimate relating, as men and woman who are sensual and alive in all aspects of our selves.
Improving the relationship with ourselves
In Biodanza the line of sexuality invites us to dance to Latin rhythms and soft melodies. The exercises support us to release tensions and emotions stored in the body, to tune in and listen to ourselves, reconnecting to the sensual pleasures of movement and expression.
Authentic communication with others
We develop our skills and capacities for clear affective communication, respectfully and sometimes playfully, non-verbally saying what we actually mean, discovering more about this aspect of ourselves, and developing the necessary trust and confidence to enjoy healthy intimate relationships.
R. Toro, the psychologist who created the Biodanza system, believed that sexual repression of our natural, instinctual and life-centred sexuality was at the root of many relationship and social problems. The problem is not sexuality. The problem lies in our distorted attitudes towards our sexual nature.
Restoring healthy attitudes
Sexuality has become a loaded word, and nowadays there seems to be a big focus on highlighting fears and concerns, e.g. HIV/AIDS, sexual violence, FGM, pedophilia, pornography, rape, abortion, sexual dysfunctions, the list goes on.
In Biodanza, our intention is to restore a healthy attitude to the way we express ourselves sexually and sensually. The aim of all sessions that focus on this line is to help people develop "a positive and respectful approach to sexuality," which will help them establish and/or improve their own existing sexual and loving relationships outside of the sessions.
Also, just to reassure you, no sexual activity takes place in these sessions.
