Q: I don´t understand why we were invited to do the dance of the serpent. Does it come under a creative vivencia? Or which line of vivencia?
A: The first weekend introduced the definition of Biodanza, which includes “relearning the original functions of life.” One of the many ways we do this is by connecting with our instincts, for example, the instinct to conserve life. In Biodanza human beings are understood as manifestations of life – and life wants to perpetuate itself. That´s why the first line of vivencia is vitality (life) and the second is sexuality, because it is through sexuality that the human species ensures its continuation.
The serpent is about desire, libido, magnetism, seduction, focused attention, sexual instinct... in that sense the dance of the serpent relates to the line of sexuality.
If you look at the top half of the theoretical model, the dance of the serpent would be connected to the collective unconscious, which is made up of archetypes and symbols – and the serpent is a powerful symbol. The dance of the serpent is part of a set of dances aimed at archetypal psycho-motor development. In other words, it is part of a group of dances aimed at developing our ability to embody (i.e. manifest through our movement) the life-enhancing behaviour-patterns corresponding to a number of archetypal symbols that bubble up from the depths of the unconscious mind. |
The dances of the animals can help us to awaken our dormant capacities. For example, the dance of the tiger helps us to develop the capacity to make our boundaries clear, the dance of the heron enables us to see the whole picture from a higher perspective, and the dance of the serpent, in addition to what has already been said, also helps us to strengthen our ability to attract what we need into our life. |
Finally, it could be argued that the dance of the serpent also relates to the phylogenesis (Darwin´s tree of life – the development of life on planet Earth) part of the theoretical model.
